Aging Demographics, Not AI, Emerge as the Greatest Workforce Threat, Indeed CEO Warns

Indeed CEO Hisayuki “Deko” Idekoba told the World Economy Summit that the workforce threat looming over developed economies is not artificial intelligence but a rapidly aging labor pool.

Why Demographic Shifts Pose the Biggest Workforce Threat

His analysis, cited by Reuters, projects a ↓ 20 million contraction in U.S. employment over the next 15 years, roughly a ↓ 5% drop in the total labor force. Only about 20% of that loss is linked to AI displacement; the remaining 80% stems from retirees exiting the market.

“The sheer number of workers aging out will have a way bigger impact than any AI wave,” Idekoba said.

Impact on Trade Jobs and the Broader Workforce Threat

Japan’s policy push to increase female participation and the U.S. immigration clampdown illustrate divergent attempts to plug the pipeline. Sectors such as construction, plumbing, healthcare and electrical work already list thousands of vacancies, a gap that automation can only partially offset, according to a Bloomberg analysis of Yale’s Budget Lab.

As the aging population tide rises, policymakers and CEOs must recalibrate talent strategies, balancing modest AI adoption with incentives to retain older workers and attract new entrants.
