New Study Reveals Alarming AI Impact on Brain Performance

Researchers from leading U.S. and U.K. universities have released a paper titled “AI assistance reduces persistence and hurts independent performance,” a stark warning about the AI impact on brain performance. The study, still awaiting peer review, tracked 350 volunteers as they tackled fraction‑based equations.

AI impact on brain performance: immediate gains, long‑term costs

Half the group received prompts from a GPT‑5‑style chatbot; the rest worked unaided. After ten minutes, the AI‑enabled participants were cut off, and their correct‑answer rate fell by ↓ 15%, with many abandoning the tasks.

A follow‑up involving 670 subjects reproduced the decline, and a third experiment using reading‑comprehension questions yielded the same pattern.

“When the tool is removed, people not only answer wrong; they simply stop trying,” said Rachit Dubey, co‑author and assistant professor at UC.

The authors liken the phenomenon to the classic “boiling frog” metaphor, suggesting that prolonged reliance erodes motivation and perseverance, effects that may prove hard to reverse. Education policymakers are urged to consider the risk of a generation that cannot gauge its own capabilities, potentially throttling innovation.

Not all findings are bleak: participants who consulted the chatbot for clarification rather than direct answers rebounded more quickly once access ended. Nevertheless, the broader picture aligns with earlier reports of “AI brain fry,” where workers clock longer hours to compensate for fatigue. Reuters and Bloomberg have highlighted similar productivity paradoxes.

As AI tools proliferate in classrooms and corporate settings, the stakes rise. The research community continues to monitor cognitive side‑effects while governments debate regulation.
