Boeing Starliner Gains NASA Backing: Two Extra Flights Secured

NASA announced Monday it will exercise contract options for ↑2 extra flights on the Boeing Starliner spacecraft, while pledging funding to accelerate the vehicle’s return to service and to scout a replacement launch system after the Atlas V’s retirement.

The move preserves United States access to low‑Earth orbit once SpaceX phases out the older Crew Dragon platform in favor of its Starship program. Reuters reported that the agency also intends to support Boeing in identifying a new rocket partner.

“SpaceX is clearly shifting focus to next‑generation hardware, and we must keep our own launch options viable,” Jared Isaacman said at the press briefing.

Funding will cover design refinements, safety upgrades, and the procurement of a fresh launch vehicle, ensuring continuity for national security and scientific payloads. The decision arrives amid broader discussions about resilience after the pandemic highlighted supply‑chain vulnerabilities.
