James Webb telescope unveils record‑size IC 348 image, spotting brown dwarfs as small as two Jupiters

The James Webb telescope has released one of its most expansive near‑infrared panoramas, unveiling the IC 348 star‑forming nebula in Perseus, only 1,000 light‑years away.

James Webb telescope’s unprecedented view of IC 348

The mosaic reveals a chaotic arena of glowing gas, dust filaments and dozens of infant stars, while also exposing a hidden population of sub‑stellar objects that test the definition of a star. In 2024, researchers employed JWST’s NIRCam to flag ↑ 39 brown‑dwarf candidates; a subsequent NIRSpec survey in 2025 confirmed nine, with the faintest weighing roughly two Jupiter masses – the smallest brown dwarfs ever recorded.

“These bodies blur the line between giant planets and stars,” noted lead scientist K. Luhman.

The upper‑right corner of the image captures protostars blasting jets that carve Herbig‑Haro objects extending trillions of kilometres. Protostellar outflows illuminate the surrounding cloud, creating luminous shock fronts. The same region was recently imaged by NASA’s Chandra X‑ray Observatory, which highlighted high‑energy emissions in vivid purple. For a broader context, see the Reuters coverage of the discovery. This JWST panorama not only showcases the telescope’s unrivaled resolution but also provides a laboratory to probe the lower mass limit of brown dwarfs, helping astronomers refine formation models.
