Chariklo Rings Transform: JWST Reveals Surprising Opacity Swaps in Distant Centaur

The James Webb Space Telescope has captured a startling shift in the Chariklo rings, the twin bands encircling the 250‑km‑wide centaur that drifts between Saturn and Uranus.

Chariklo rings show opposite opacity trends

First spotted in 2013, the rings were re‑examined from Earth in 2014 and 2017, but JWST’s 2022 stellar occultation delivered unprecedented detail. Researchers found the inner band now appears denser, with opacity rising ↑ 15%, while the outer band has thinned, its opacity dropping ↓ 20%. Three explanations were proposed: JWST’s sharper resolution exposing both dense and sparse zones; intrinsic changes in ring material or grain composition; and wavelength‑dependent scattering that alters apparent brightness.

“Our results force us to rethink how they form, how they evolve, and what mechanisms maintain their stability,” said Pablo Santos‑Sanz of the Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia.

The team plans a follow‑up occultation when Chariklo next passes a bright star, aiming to separate genuine temporal evolution from optical effects. Precise timing relied on Reuters Space data and the European Space Agency’s Gaia catalog, illustrating the extreme coordination required for such deep‑space observations. Similar techniques are now used to probe exoplanet atmospheres with JWST’s infrared suite, underscoring the telescope’s expanding role in planetary science. NASA continues to support these efforts, highlighting the importance of remote sensing for objects too faint for direct imaging.
