Apple’s latest spec sheet now states that the iPhone 18 Pro Max US modem differs from its global siblings, a nuance first spotted by French tech analyst Nicolas Lellouche on Numerama. The iPhone 18 Pro ships with Apple’s in‑house C2 modem everywhere, but the Pro Max swaps the chip for a Qualcomm unit when sold in the United States.

What the firmware tells us

A tipster known as @itspdfu dissected iOS 27 binaries and found code paths that activate a Qualcomm modem on U.S. devices, while the rest of the world runs the C2. Apple has not commented, leaving analysts to infer motives.

“Apple appears to be honoring its existing Qualcomm supply pact while nudging the market toward its own silicon,” a source told Reuters.

The C2 modem boasts ultra‑fast mmWave 5G and claims meaningfully faster uploads than the previous C1X, while drawing ↑ 15% less power. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X85, likely the chip inside U.S. units, already supports comparable mmWave bands, suggesting Apple is playing catch‑up rather than leading.

Apple introduced its first C1 modem in the iPhone 16e (Feb 2025) and the C1X in the iPhone Air (Sept 2025). The C2 now arrives in the iPhone 18 Pro line, but the Pro Max in the United States remains an outlier as the transition away from Qualcomm proceeds.
