After a flawless launch on April 1, NASA’s Artemis II crew has largely avoided the hiccups that plagued earlier tests, from a finicky toilet to a stubborn waste‑handling unit.

Orion helium leak prompts redesign ahead of Artemis II re‑entry

Yet, as the crew looped the Moon and set a trajectory back to Earth, mission control scrapped a planned manual‑piloting demo on Wednesday night. Instead, engineers seized the window to run an extra propulsion check, aiming to capture data on a small helium leak that feeds propellant through Orion’s tank network. Jeff Radigan, NASA’s lead flight director, told Reuters that the leak is “well within safety margins” and poses no danger to the crew’s return. The anomaly was quantified at ↓ 0.2% of total tank pressure, a figure that, while minor, will drive a redesign of the feed‑line architecture before the next deep‑space mission.

“We are treating this as an engineering opportunity, not a show‑stopper,”

Radigan added, emphasizing that the spacecraft’s integrity remains intact. The four astronauts – ↑ 4 in total – continue their journey home, while NASA schedules a post‑flight review to incorporate the leak‑mitigation measures. For further details, see AP News.
