10-year Treasury yield hits 5% – Is stagflation returning?

The 10-year Treasury yield breached ↑ 5% this month, a level not seen since 2007, reviving concerns of a 1970s‑style stagflation scenario.

10-year Treasury yield hits 5% amid stagflation fears

The surge follows a six‑year climb from pandemic lows near 0.5%, driven by aggressive Federal Reserve rate hikes, persistent inflation and tightening fiscal balances. In April, billionaire investor Ray Dalio told CNBC,

“We’re certainly in a stagflationary period.”

Unlike the 1970s, current consumer price growth sits at ↓ 3.4% year‑over‑year, well below the 14.8% peak of 1980, and unemployment hovers around 4.1%. Yet the combination of elevated price pressures and modest growth forces the Fed into a lose‑lose dilemma, echoing the “great slowdown” narrative warned by Reuters. The Treasury market, now over $29 trillion in issuance, shows heightened sensitivity to energy‑price shocks from the Iran conflict, as oil trades above $100 per barrel. Analysts at Bloomberg note that if inflation remains above the 2% target, further yield pressure is likely, potentially reshaping capital‑allocation decisions across the global economy.
