How a Garlic-Derived Molecule Halts mosquito mating

Researchers at Yale University, led by biologist John Carlson, stumbled upon a surprising inhibitor of mosquito mating while screening 43 common produce extracts. The culprit is diallyl disulfide, a compound that triggers the insect’s TrpA1 taste receptor, inducing a sensation of satiety that suppresses reproductive drive. In laboratory assays, female Aedes aegypti exposed to the compound laid ↓ 80% fewer eggs and showed near‑zero courtship attempts. Fruit flies and tsetse flies responded similarly, whereas wasps were unaffected due to the absence of TrpA1.

“The effect is immediate and robust,” said Carlson in a press briefing.

The discovery could reshape vector‑control strategies, offering a non‑lethal, behavior‑based tool to curb diseases such as yellow fever, dengue and Zika. The findings appear in Cell and echo earlier reports on garlic’s mild repellent properties noted by Reuters. While further field trials are needed, the approach sidesteps chemical resistance and may complement existing insecticide programs.
