WHO has launched the inaugural clinical trial to evaluate an experimental antiviral designed to stop infection by the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola among contacts in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The effort arrives as the outbreak outpaces containment and spills beyond established transmission chains.

Bundibugyo strain of Ebola: trial details

The study, overseen by the World Health Organization, will enroll up to ↑ 500 participants who have been exposed to confirmed cases. Researchers will administer the drug within 48 hours of exposure and monitor participants for viral markers over a 21‑day period.

What the trial hopes to prove

Success could deliver the first prophylactic tool against any Ebola variant, shifting the strategic response from reactive isolation to pre‑emptive protection. Health officials stress that the antiviral is not a vaccine; it aims to suppress viral replication before symptoms emerge.

“If we can block the virus at the point of entry, we change the calculus of every future outbreak,” said Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO’s technical lead on Ebola.

International partners, including the Reuters reporting team, are tracking the trial’s progress. The initiative also draws lessons from the global pandemic response, highlighting the need for rapid‑deployment therapeutics.
