A devastating drone attack on a key hospital in Sudan has killed 64 people, including 13 children, two nurses, and a doctor, according to the World Health Organization. The strike occurred during Eid al-Fitr, a time when the facility would have been treating patients and providing critical care. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus condemned the attack, calling it a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law. “Hospitals and health workers must never be targets,” he stated. The assault highlights the escalating violence in Sudan’s ongoing civil conflict, where medical infrastructure has increasingly become a casualty of war. As the death toll rises, humanitarian organizations warn that access to healthcare in conflict zones is rapidly deteriorating, leaving civilians—especially children—vulnerable to preventable deaths. The incident also raises alarms about the use of drones in urban warfare, a tactic that has blurred the lines between military and civilian targets. This comes amid growing global concerns over the proliferation of autonomous weapons systems, which critics argue could escalate conflicts into unpredictable and catastrophic scenarios, including the potential for nuclear escalation if tensions spiral out of control.
