WhatsApp self-destruct messages: new read‑once timer under test

WhatsApp is piloting a feature that erases messages once they have been opened. According to beta data from WABetaInfo, the option lives in Settings → Privacy → Default message timer and adds an “After reading” mode. When activated, unread chats still vanish after 24 hours, but a second countdown starts once the recipient views the text. Users can pick 5 minutes, 1 hour or 12 hours – the latter shown as ↑ 12 hours in the UI. A disclaimer notes that third‑party tools could still capture content, but the built‑in timer is the most restrictive option yet.

“Messages disappear after they’re read, but savvy users may find workarounds,” the beta note warns.

The rollout mirrors earlier Android trials and suggests a broader release is imminent. Analysts at Reuters and Bloomberg view the move as a response to growing privacy expectations on mobile messengers.
