War in Iran Fuels a Deepening Ecological Crisis in the Persian Gulf

Amid relentless missile exchanges, the war in Iran is turning the Persian Gulf into an ecological tinderbox. Already scarred by decades of over‑fishing, desalination brine and oil leaks, the basin now faces an acceleration of habitat loss that scientists say could become irreversible within a generation.

How the war in Iran is accelerating the Persian Gulf’s ecological collapse

Marine biodiversity is hemorrhaging; shrimp catches have fallen ↓ 30% since 2021, while toxic plumes from damaged infrastructure spread farther offshore.

“The conflict is not just a geopolitical flashpoint; it is a catalyst for environmental disaster,” warned a marine ecologist with the Reuters network.

Satellite imagery from AP News shows oil slicks expanding at ↑ 15% month‑over‑month, smothering coral reefs that once supported thriving fisheries. Coastal wetlands, already fragmented, are now exposed to acid rain and salt‑water intrusion, threatening the livelihoods of thousands of fishermen in Iran, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. International aid groups caution that without an immediate ceasefire, the Gulf’s “blue economy” could collapse, leaving a legacy of dead zones and economic ruin. The window to intervene is closing fast; policymakers must treat the war’s environmental fallout with the same urgency as its human cost.
