VivaTech: Europe’s Tech Beacon at 10‑Year Mark

VivaTech, now in its tenth edition, has grown from 45,000 attendees in 2016 to a projected ↑ 135,000 this June, making Paris the continent’s biggest tech gathering.

Hall 7 at the Porte de Versailles will host debates on AI’s mixed revenue impact (↓ 95% of pilots flop, MIT reports), digital sovereignty and energy‑hungry sustainability.

Maurice Lévy, former Publicis chief, is the architect behind the summit. He recalls a 2011 G8‑era round‑table that featured Eric Schmidt, Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos, producing a report presented to leaders including Reuters-cited President Barack Obama.

“If the White House wants to dictate the agenda, you lose the freedom that makes innovation thrive,” Lévy told the president’s aides.

The Obama overture was politely declined, but the idea of a Europe‑centric forum took root. Four years later, Publicis leveraged its 90th‑anniversary ambition to launch a competition that attracted 6,500 startup applications; the winners formed the core of VivaTech’s inaugural roster.

Since then, the event has blended the swagger of WebSummit with the gravitas of Davos, drawing CEOs like Jensen Huang (NVIDIA), Emmanuel Macron and AI pioneer Yann LeCun.

All sessions run in English – the lingua franca of global tech – while Saturday’s family‑focused program switches to French, a nod to local culture.

Looking ahead, Lévy warns that “globalization is dead” and Europe must accelerate innovation before regulation chokes progress, lest the continent become a second‑tier player beside the U.S. and China.

The pandemic taught the world that rapid digital adoption is possible; VivaTech aims to prove that Europe can replicate that speed on a larger scale.
