Universities Data Centers Surge: Campus Sales Fuel AI Infrastructure Boom

Universities data centers are becoming the hottest real‑estate commodity as AI workloads devour power, water and fiber.

Universities data centers: the new campus cash cow

When Amazon’s cloud arm swooped on George Washington University’s 120‑acre Ashburn campus for ↑ $427 million, the transaction lit a firestorm across academia.

“We’re chipping away at our higher‑ed resources to make room for this technology,” said former professor Ellen Scully‑Russ.

The university will remain on the site for up to five years while it reallocates labs and offices, and a portion of the proceeds will seed a new endowment. Faculty received one‑time bonuses of $2,500, a modest consolation in a climate of shrinking federal research funds.

Across the Great Lakes, the University of Michigan, in partnership with Los Alamos National Laboratory, is earmarking ↓ 50 megawatts of power for a $1.25 billion high‑performance computing hub in Ypsilanti Township. The administration insists the facility is a “computing center,” not a commercial data center, but local officials have lodged formal opposition.

Both deals illustrate a broader land grab: universities sit on parcels prized for electricity‑dense, fiber‑rich sites, while campus leaders scramble to balance fiscal pressure with academic mission.

Analysts at Reuters note that the AI boom could reshape higher‑education asset portfolios for a decade, yet some observers warn the rush may be a short‑lived bubble.

For students and faculty, the question remains whether the cash infusion justifies the loss of traditional learning spaces, a debate that will likely echo as AI demand accelerates.
