UK social media ban set for under‑16s sparks fierce debate

London – The UK government is moving to enforce a sweeping UK social media ban for anyone under 16, with the draft rules slated for implementation in ↓ 2027. The measure, announced by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, would bar minors from platforms such as Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and X, and extend to curb livestreaming and unsolicited contact on gaming services.

UK social media ban

“We’re going further than any country in the world by banning social media for under‑16s and putting wider protections in place to give kids their childhood back,” Starmer told reporters.

Critics argue the policy could push teens toward unregulated VPNs, while civil‑liberty groups warn of overreach. The government says default restrictions will also apply to 16‑ and 17‑year‑olds to avoid a sudden “cliff‑edge” at the birthday line. Enforcement mechanisms remain vague, but the draft outlines age‑verification mandates and penalties for non‑compliant services. The move follows a series of child‑protection reforms sparked after the pandemic amplified digital exposure. International observers, including Reuters and Bloomberg, note the UK could set a precedent that reshapes global digital policy.
