Uganda has formally petitioned the international community to lift Ebola travel bans, known as Uganda Ebola travel restrictions, after the last confirmed case— a Congolese national— was released from Mulago Hospital’s isolation unit on Thursday.

The discharge triggers the WHO‑mandated ↓ 42‑day clock that counts down to an official declaration of being Ebola‑free, provided no ↑ 0 new infections emerge.

Health officials stress that the countdown is a precaution, not a sign of lingering danger. “We have contained the virus, but vigilance remains essential,” said a senior Ministry of Health spokesperson,

“The window allows us to prove the outbreak is truly over.”

Neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo continues to report rising case numbers, a factor that fuels regional anxiety. International airlines have already begun reviewing policies, citing Reuters reports that some carriers lifted restrictions on a provisional basis.

Uganda’s appeal aligns with the WHO recommendation that travel bans be rescinded once a country completes the observation period without new cases, a move expected to revive trade and tourism flows.
