UFC Freedom 250: A Cage Built on History

Donald Trump walked out to Kid Rock’s “American Bad Ass” and a roaring ovation before taking his usual cageside seat at a 2024 UFC show in New York. This week he will trade the Oval Office for the South Lawn as the UFC Freedom 250 kicks off at sunset, timed to his 80th birthday and the nation’s 250th anniversary.

The Claw Takes Center Stage

The $↑ 60 million structure, dubbed “the Claw,” towers 90 feet above the historic Easter Egg Roll lawn, complete with LED walls, surround‑sound and four giant screens. While officials expect ↓ 4,000 ticketed spectators inside, up to 120,000 fans may line the Ellipse for free viewing.

“We’re making history,” said UFC CEO Dana White.

Top‑ranked fighters were courted for the card; Conor McGregor posted “Count me in,” yet he and Jon Jones ultimately declined. The final seven‑bout lineup features interim heavyweight champion Alex Pereira vs. Ciryl Gane, lightweight star Ilia Topuria vs. Justin Gaethje, and former title‑contender Michael Chandler.

Bo Nickal, the three‑time NCAA wrestling champion who once shook hands with the president at a 2019 White House ceremony, will square off against Kyle Daukaus in front of the Claw. “Playing golf with him was surreal,” Nickal told Reuters, “and now I fight in his backyard.”

The event streams exclusively on Paramount+, a move designed to drive subscriptions rather than rely on network ratings. Analysts note the strategy mirrors the pandemic-era shift toward direct‑to‑consumer sports packages.

Security concerns linger, with a federal lawsuit briefly challenging the venue before a judge dismissed it on Friday. Yet officials insist the show will proceed rain or shine, after a lightning‑delayed press conference at the Lincoln Memorial.
