U.S. measles cases surge past last year’s total

The Johns Hopkins tracker shows U.S. measles cases climbing to ↑ 2,295, a level not seen since 1991 and already eclipsing the entire 2025 tally.

Most infections are among the unvaccinated; herd immunity crumbles when coverage dips below 95%. States such as South Carolina, Utah, Texas, Florida and Arizona report the bulk of the outbreak.

“We are witnessing the most significant resurgence in decades,” a CDC spokesperson warned, referencing Reuters.

Complications can include pneumonia, encephalitis and, in rare cases, death at a rate of ↓ 1‑3 per 1,000 infected children.

The surge arrives while key health posts remain vacant and after Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. initially downplayed the threat, later urging MMR vaccination as the best defense.

With the measles elimination status slated for review in November, officials stress that the window to restore >95% coverage is closing fast, especially as the nation continues to grapple with the legacy of the pandemic.
