Trunk Tools AI Reduces Review Cycle

Trunk Tools AI has reengineered construction document processing, cutting review time from ↑ 50% reduction (60 days to 10 days). The startup built a three‑layer stack—perception, semantics, agents—trained on proprietary schematics and millions of pages of drawings. “We set out to pull data from scattered systems, structure it, and feed an ontology‑driven knowledge graph,” says founder Sarah Buchner. By converting raw PDFs, BIM files and field notes into a searchable graph, autonomous agents now flag conflicts, generate change‑order narratives, and answer RFI queries in seconds.

Why Generic LLMs Falter

Foundation models excel at breadth but stumble on niche vocabularies, abbreviation‑heavy specs, and implicit construction logic.

“General‑purpose LLMs are okay at everything, weak at anything niche,”

notes Kriti Faujdar, AI product lead. Retrieval‑augmented generation offers facts but cannot reason over domain‑specific symbols—like a 2 mm line that denotes a structural beam.

Trunk’s perception layer uses custom vision models to read symbols; the semantic layer maps them to a knowledge graph; the top‑level agents query this graph. The system has already saved clients an average ↑ $10,000 saved per rework avoided and 20‑40 minutes per field question, according to internal data (Reuters, Bloomberg).

With seven purpose‑built agents handling RFIs, submittals, and drawing reviews, Trunk claims the workflow now runs autonomously: one agent flags a displaced beam, another generates an RFI, and a third notifies the trade partner—all without human intervention. The approach promises similar gains for legal, healthcare and other document‑heavy sectors.
