Trump Pressures GOP to Kill Filibuster as Senate Leaders Push Back

President Donald Trump has escalated his push for Senate Republicans to eliminate the filibuster, even as key GOP leaders signal strong opposition to the move. In a series of Truth Social posts Thursday morning, Trump argued that ending the 60-vote threshold would break the partial government shutdown now entering its third week and advance his immigration agenda. “TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER, and get our airports, and everything else, moving again,” he wrote, referencing the chaos at U.S. airports caused by staffing shortages among TSA agents. The current partial shutdown, affecting only the Department of Homeland Security, is on track to surpass the 43-day record set in 2019 unless Congress reaches a deal by the weekend. Acting TSA Administrator Ha Nguyen McNeill warned Wednesday that some security lines have stretched beyond four and a half hours, marking “the highest wait times in TSA history.” Trump’s push comes as Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer faces pressure to negotiate with Republicans. Trump claimed Schumer would seek a shutdown deal fearing Republicans might act unilaterally to end the filibuster—”something which they should do whether he makes a deal or not.” This marks the second time in months Trump has urged the “nuclear option.” In October, he called for Republicans to “go for what is called the Nuclear Option—Get rid of the Filibuster, and get rid of it, NOW!” during a prior shutdown. While some Republicans, including Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, have voiced support—Johnson wrote in a Daily Wire op-ed that “things must change—we need a paradigm shift”—most Senate leadership remains firmly opposed. Majority Leader John Thune told the Washington Examiner last week that ending the filibuster “doesn’t serve anybody’s interest,” echoing past statements that the 60-vote threshold “has protected this country.” Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso, Republican Conference Chair Tom Cotton, and Senator Susan Collins of Maine have all defended the filibuster as a safeguard for minority rights, warning it prevents a simple majority from enacting sweeping changes like DC statehood or Supreme Court expansion. The stalemate highlights a deeper divide within the GOP over strategy as the shutdown’s economic and political costs mount.
