In a New York address, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that the long‑standing reliance on cheap imports has eroded American sovereignty.

Why the U.S. economic strategy must shift

“The nation that depends on its adversaries for critical inputs is not truly sovereign,” Bessent told the Economic Club of New York,

“and the nation that reduces its economics to consumption is not truly prosperous.”

He argued that previous policymakers assumed low prices would offset lost manufacturing capacity, a premise that proved ↓ 5% in resilience during recent crises.

From tariffs to reshoring: a bipartisan pivot

The speech aligns with President Trump’s tariff agenda while echoing concerns voiced by former officials such as Jake Sullivan, who in 2023 warned that “markets always allocate capital productively and efficiently” is a myth.

Bessent called for diversifying supply chains away from “dangerous concentrations” and emphasized that the United States possesses “many tools” to enforce fair trade, citing upcoming Reuters analysis on emerging trade measures.

He praised Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh for ending forward guidance, noting Trump’s confidence in the Fed, a sentiment echoed in a recent Bloomberg interview.

Ultimately, the revised U.S. economic strategy prioritizes domestic production, supply‑chain resilience, and national security over pure cost‑cutting, signaling a long‑term shift away from pre‑pandemic globalization.
