Tehran Warns Mediators: Trump’s Peace Overture Smells Like Bait

Iranian officials have privately told Pakistani, Egyptian and Turkish mediators that they will not fall for what they see as President Trump’s negotiating trap a third time, warning that previous rounds of U.S.-Iran talks ended in “surprise” Israeli attacks backed by Washington. The White House is pushing for in-person talks as early as Thursday in Islamabad, but Tehran views the simultaneous deployment of thousands of U.S. troops and warplanes to the Middle East as proof the offer is a ruse. “Trump has a hand open for a deal and the other is a fist, waiting to punch you in the f***ing face,” a Trump adviser told Axios. While Trump has touted an Iranian “gift” of oil and gas-related shipments through the Strait of Hormuz as a trust-building gesture, Iranian officials remain focused on stopping the bombing and securing a ceasefire—concessions they say the U.S. is still unwilling to offer. CENTCOM has directed additional Marine expeditionary units and an 82nd Airborne brigade to deploy in coming days, with a White House official confirming that a ground operation remains an option even if talks proceed. The U.S. delivered a 15-point plan—covering war termination, strait reopening, sanctions relief and limits on Iran’s nuclear and missile programs—through the mediators on Monday, but Tehran’s priority is ending the strikes first. Both sides remember how the last negotiations collapsed: Israel attacked Iran with U.S. backing just days before planned nuclear talks last June, and a similar pattern repeated three weeks ago when a tentative Geneva agreement was followed by U.S.-Israeli strikes. As one Iranian official put it to the mediators, “We don’t want to be fooled again.”
