Taco Bell lettuce cyclospora outbreak expands across five states

Federal health agencies have pinpointed shredded iceberg lettuce sourced from Mexico and served at Taco Bell restaurants in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia as the vector behind a surge of cyclospora infections. The CDC issued an urgent advisory on Thursday, urging consumers to discard the product while Reuters reported that more than ↑ 4,700 cases have been logged nationwide, eclipsing the 2019 record.

Traceback reveals single supplier

An FDA investigation traced the lettuce to a sole grower in Salinas, California. Though the agency’s public notice omitted the company’s name, a source familiar with the probe identified Taylor Farms. The supplier has faced prior food‑safety alerts, including a 2013 cyclosporiasis episode linked to salad mixes and a 2024 E. coli incident tied to onions at a major fast‑food chain.

“Taco Bell has halted use of the implicated lettuce and is cooperating with FDA to remove any remaining product from the market,” the CDC said.

Officials warned that other brands or distribution channels could emerge as the investigation continues. The parasite, thriving in warm climates, spreads via fecally contaminated water used in irrigation, a pattern observed in past outbreaks that often peak in late spring and summer.

While cyclospora generally causes self‑limiting watery diarrhea treatable with antibiotics, the sheer scale of this episode has reignited scrutiny of supply‑chain transparency, especially in the post‑pandemic era. Taco Bell released a statement confirming a temporary removal of the affected ingredient and pledged ongoing monitoring in line with public‑health guidance.
