Why superworms outperform traditional beetle colonies

The larvae are larger than most beetle maggots and, crucially, they stay in the larval stage as long as they are kept together, allowing museums to reuse the same colony for months. Speed is remarkable: specimens that once required days of manual work are ready in ↑ 30% of the time.

From kitchen scraps to museum labs

Researchers in Stuttgart and Mashhad first noticed the effect when a stray chicken bone was tossed into a superworm feeder. Within hours the meat vanished, leaving a pristine skeleton. Inspired, they trialed the method on bats, a 4.2‑kg wolf and even fragile avian skulls, reporting no damage to the smallest elements.

“We were genuinely surprised by how quickly the larvae cleared the tissue while preserving delicate bones,” says postdoctoral researcher Niloofar Alaei Kakhki.

Compared with dermestids, superworms pose a lower biosecurity risk: adults only emerge when larvae are isolated, eliminating accidental egg deposition on priceless artifacts. Cost‑effectiveness also shines; a modest starter colony can be maintained in simple containers with wheat bran and vegetable waste, making the approach affordable for small museums that cannot justify expensive chemical baths. For institutions wary of chemicals, the biological route offers a sustainable alternative that turns waste into a cleaning workforce. Reuters has highlighted the growing interest in eco‑friendly museum practices, and this superworm breakthrough fits that trend. While the method will not replace every preparation technique, it adds a versatile tool to the curator’s kit, especially where fragile specimens demand gentle handling. The authors envision broader adoption across universities and research labs, citing the ease of scaling colonies up or down to match workload. In short, superworms are poised to become the new standard for rapid, safe skeleton preparation in the museum world.
