Amid soaring market volatility triggered by the Iran‑Israel conflict, ASEAN heads convened in Jakarta to champion a regional power grid that could insulate member economies from external shocks. Energy security topped the agenda, with ministers urging the creation of an emergency fuel stockpile to buffer against supply disruptions.

Why a regional power grid matters now

Analysts cite a ↓ 12% dip in regional electricity trade volumes since the war began, underscoring the fragility of current interconnections. A coordinated grid could recoup ↑ 18% in cross‑border capacity utilization within five years, according to a study cited by Reuters.

“Without a unified grid, we remain vulnerable to price spikes and blackouts,” said Thailand’s energy minister during the summit.

Further, the proposed fuel reserve, equivalent to 30 million barrels, would be financed through a joint ASEAN fund, a move mirrored in recent Bloomberg reports on regional resilience strategies.
