Senate Democrats Target the anti-weaponization fund

On Monday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced a legislative push to outlaw the anti-weaponization fund – a ↓ $1.776 billion pool the Trump administration created to compensate individuals it labels “victims of weaponization.” The Department of Justice, while publicly “disagreeing” with a judge’s temporary injunction, said it will comply with the order that freezes any disbursements for at least two weeks.

“If Republicans truly abandon this scheme, they should have no trouble banning it in law,” Schumer told the Senate floor.

Schumer warned that any attempt to resurrect the fund through the upcoming budget reconciliation – a fast‑track process that could also carry a ↓ $72 billion immigration package – will be met with a “permanent ban amendment.” He added that Democrats will force a vote on the amendment regardless of GOP tactics. “We will not let a presidential slush fund survive a single cent,” Schumer said, echoing a “Dear Colleague” letter that frames the fund as “one of the most corrupt schemes ever launched by a president.”

Republican leaders, including Senate Majority Leader John Thune, expressed concern that the dispute could stall the reconciliation bill, while Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche maintained the fund is “a lawful process for victims of lawfare.” The controversy has already drawn lawsuits from Capitol‑security officers who argue the pool would illegally reward participants in the Jan. 6 attack.
