Rural backlash to AI data centers hits a tipping point

When Laura Beth moved to Coweta County, Ga., in 2023 she prized the quiet, open land behind her home. A 2025 announcement that a hyperscale data hub would sit on her backyard sparked a rapid Facebook rally called “Stop Project Sail.” Today more than 8,000 locals have joined, filing petitions, erecting yard signs and pursuing litigation against Atlas Development and the county board.

Nationwide sentiment on AI data centers

A June Reuters poll showed only ↓ 14% of Americans comfortable with a data center nearby, while a Bloomberg analysis recorded a ↑ 70% surge in AI‑focused facilities over the past three years. On July 18, activists staged 142 protests in 42 states, marking the largest coordinated day of opposition.

“If we stay, the plant will be in our backyard,” says resident Steve Swope, fearing well‑water depletion and septic damage.

Local officials argue the project promises long‑term tax revenue, yet opponents point to water use equivalent to a town of 50,000 and electricity demands that already consume 4% of U.S. power. In New York, Governor Kathy Hochul has imposed the first statewide moratorium on new hyperscale sites, and several other states are debating similar pauses.

The fight leaves families like the Beths in limbo, hesitant to invest in homes that could soon be shadowed by massive cooling towers. As more jurisdictions enact bans or moratoria, the debate over resource strain versus economic gain sharpens across the country.
