Rhine record low water levels disrupt trade

For the first time in decades, the Rhine record low water levels have forced operators to slash cargo volumes, with barge traffic down ↓ 30% on the German stretch. Hydroelectric output along the river fell ↓ 15%, prompting concerns over energy security. The drought, mirrored in the Danube and Po, has turned Europe’s inland waterways into bottlenecks.

“We are seeing unprecedented constraints on vessel draft,” said Klaus Meyer, CEO of Rhine Shipping AG.

Logistics firms are scrambling for alternative routes, while governments weigh emergency water releases. According to Reuters, the water level at Cologne dipped to 1.2 m, the lowest since 1900. The situation underscores the fragility of supply chains dependent on riverine transport.

Implications for European energy and commerce

Reduced flow curtails turbine efficiency, threatening renewable energy targets. Analysts at Bloomberg warn that prolonged drought could push freight costs up by several euros per tonne.
