The first participants have been enrolled in an unprecedented Ebola treatment trial in the Ituri province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, marking a record‑fast launch just six weeks after the WHO declared the outbreak a public health emergency.

Ebola treatment trial reaches first patient enrollment

The programme tests two investigational antivirals, mAb114 and REGN-EB3, under a joint effort by the WHO, the Democratic Republic of the Congo Ministry of Health and international partners. Scientists say the speed of setup could shave weeks off the deadly curve. A recent Reuters analysis estimates the trial could cut mortality by ↑ 30% if efficacy holds.

“We are witnessing an unprecedented mobilization of resources and expertise,” a WHO spokesperson told reporters.

The trial’s design follows lessons learned from the 2014‑2016 West Africa epidemic and the ongoing pandemic response, aiming to generate robust data within months. While no drug is yet approved, early enrollment offers a glimmer of hope for frontline clinicians battling the virus.
