Ray Dalio on the emerging global conflict

Ray Dalio, the Bridgewater founder, warned at Davos that the globe may be slipping into a full‑scale world war, arguing that the current Iran‑U.S. flare‑up is merely a fragment of a broader confrontation pitting China, Russia and Iran against the United States and its network of overseas bases.

He stresses that most analysts are fixated on headlines – the two‑week cease‑fire, gas prices, or the upcoming U.S. midterms – while ignoring the systemic forces that could reshape the international order.

Interlinked battlefields

From Ukraine to the Red Sea, multiple flashpoints involve nuclear‑armed states, creating a web of conflicts that mirrors the pre‑World War I environment. History shows wars rarely begin with a single shot; they emerge from economic strain, alliance shifts, and military buildups.

Alliance geometry

China’s voting record alongside Russia at the United Nations, and its oil pact that delivers ↑ 80‑90% of Iran’s output to Beijing, illustrate a solid bloc opposed to Washington, Kyiv, Tokyo and the Gulf monarchies. By contrast, the United States maintains ↓ 750‑800 foreign bases – a logistical burden that could limit simultaneous operations in Asia and the Middle East.

“We are witnessing the early stage of a multi‑theater struggle that could last years,” Dalio told reporters.

For policymakers, the stakes are clear: a prolonged Iran‑U.S. standoff will test allies’ confidence in American guarantees, potentially spurring new nuclear ambitions across the region.

Analysts at Reuters and Bloomberg note that financial markets are already pricing in heightened risk, but many still assume a swift return to “normal.” Dalio warns that the assumption is dangerously optimistic.
