MouthPad: a discreet tongue‑driven controller

Tomás Vega left Neuralink to build MouthPad, a retainer‑like device that turns tongue movements into mouse clicks, aiming to help people with limited hand function today, not in a distant future.

Unlike surgically implanted brain‑computer interfaces, the device sits on the palate, uses a golden capacitive trackpad and a tiny air chamber to differentiate presses from sips, and pairs with a companion app that layers shortcuts on a radial menu.

From childhood stutter to startup founder

Vega’s fascination with input hardware began at age five, grew through programming at eleven, and survived experiments with scalp electrodes and voice‑control rigs. He reasoned, “What part of the body still has fine motor control for those who cannot use their hands?” The answer was the tongue.

“We want technology to disappear so the human stays front‑and‑center,” Vega says.

The mouthpiece is custom‑fitted via an intra‑oral scan; a serpentine flexible circuit stretches to fit any palate while a protected bridge guards the electronics from bite forces. Early prototypes used pressure films, but the current version relies on capacitive sensing—the same principle behind smartphone trackpads.

In trials with ↑150 participants, including ↑58 users with hand impairments, the average selection speed reached ↑3.43 bits per second, with five users surpassing ↑5 BPS after less than two hours of practice.

While camera‑based head tracking can be faster for able‑bodied users, MouthPad’s invisibility sidesteps the stigma of visible assistive gear—a concern highlighted in a Reuters feature on disability tech.

The company has shipped ↑180 units at a price of $1,400; a second product, Vox, captures low‑volume, body‑conducted speech for private dictation at $200. Both devices await FDA clearance, but insurers are expected to cover part of the cost once approved.

Vega plans to push the technology into Europe and Japan while trimming the price toward consumer‑electronics levels. He cautions against premature scaling, recalling the rapid‑fire releases of rivals that faltered.
