Middle East Desalination Plants Face Escalating Threats Amid Regional Conflict

As regional tensions intensify, desalination technology—the lifeblood of water security across the Middle East—has become a strategic target. Iran’s foreign minister accused the US of attacking a desalination plant on Qeshm Island in early March, disrupting water supplies to nearly 30 villages. The US denied responsibility. In the weeks since, both Bahrain and Kuwait have reported damage to desalination facilities and blamed Iran, which also denied involvement. President Donald Trump subsequently threatened the destruction of “possibly all desalinization plants” in Iran if the Strait of Hormuz was not reopened, later escalating threats against other civilian infrastructure including power plants and bridges.
