Microsoft has announced a sweeping Surface price increase across its entire lineup, lifting entry‑level models by up to ↓ $250 and premium units by more than ↓ $300. The move, justified by rising memory and component costs, now places most mid‑range Surface PCs above the $1,000 mark and flagship devices starting at $1,500, overtaking comparable Apple MacBook Air and Pro configurations.

Price adjustments by model

The 12‑inch Surface Pro, previously the cheapest at $799, now starts at $1,049. The 13‑inch Surface Pro 512 GB variant jumps from $1,199 to $1,499, while the 256 GB configuration has been dropped. The 13‑inch Surface Laptop climbs from $899 to $1,149, the 13.8‑inch from $999 to $1,499, and the 15‑inch from $1,299 to $1,599.

“Recent increases in memory and component costs forced us to adjust pricing,” a Microsoft spokesperson told Reuters.

Notably, the 13.8‑inch Surface Laptop 7 with 16 GB RAM and 256 GB storage, once $100 cheaper than the 256 GB M4 MacBook Air, now sits $400 above the 512 GB M5 MacBook Air, whose base price rose to $1,099 with extra SSD capacity.

High‑end configurations are also affected: the Surface Laptop 7 equipped with 64 GB RAM and a 1 TB SSD now costs $3,649, surpassing the 16‑inch 64 GB‑RAM, 1 TB‑SSD M5 Pro MacBook Pro at $3,300.

Industry analysts note the timing aligns with Samsung’s recent tablet price hikes, both firms citing global memory shortages as AI‑focused data centers hog the limited supply.
