Michigan diarrheal parasite outbreak hits ↑ 1,251 confirmed cases

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services disclosed that as of July 9, the Michigan diarrheal parasite outbreak has surged to ↑ 1,251 cases, with ↓ 44 patients requiring hospital care.

Rapid escalation since late June

Two isolated infections were logged on June 22. By July 4 the count had jumped to 572, and a single day on July 8 produced 239 new reports, the highest daily spike recorded.

Officials in the southeastern corridor of the state are canvassing restaurants, water supplies, and private wells to pinpoint the contamination source. “We are mobilizing every available resource to contain the spread,” said a spokesperson,

“Public safety remains our top priority.”

Neighboring Ohio is tracking a parallel rise, with state health bulletins indicating over 500 cases. Reuters notes that the pathogen spreads primarily through contaminated food and water, echoing concerns raised during the recent pandemic about hygiene standards.

Hospitals report a steady influx of patients presenting severe dehydration, prompting clinicians to issue guidance on rehydration therapy and early detection.
