Michael Dell $750 million gift to the University of Texas at Austin marks a watershed moment for AI‑infused health care.

Michael Dell $750 million gift

The Dell Foundation, together with Susan Dell, pledged ↑ $750 million to launch a new medical center and research campus designed around artificial intelligence. Scheduled to break ground in 2024 and open by 2030, the 300‑acre complex will blend clinical services, undergraduate scholarships, and a supercomputing hub powered by Dell’s AI infrastructure. Key components include a 300‑500‑bed hospital, an emergency department, and a research wing where algorithms will accelerate diagnosis and personalize treatment. The university’s Texas Advanced Computing Center is already assembling the nation’s largest academic supercomputer, a project bolstered by the same donation. “We are building a place where discovery, learning and patient care converge,” the Dells said in a press briefing.

“If you want to make a lasting impact, you must think beyond the present,” Michael Dell told CNBC.

The contribution pushes the Dells’ total giving to UT Austin past ↑ $1 billion, joining a wave of billionaire philanthropy that includes Phil Knight’s $2 billion pledge to Oregon Health & Science University and Stephen Schwarzman’s $350 million endowment to MIT’s computing school. For context, Dell, who launched his eponymous tech empire from a dormitory in 1984, now leverages his Reuters-cited net worth of $177 billion to shape the AI era of medicine. The campus will also host student housing and expand the university’s scholarship pool, aiming to attract talent nationwide. As AI reshapes every sector, the Dell gift underscores how private capital can accelerate public‑sector innovation.
