Halley’s comet and the flying monk

The 11th‑century Benedictine brother Eilmer of Malmesbury is famed for a daring glide from a 150‑foot tower and for a cryptic remark about Halley’s comet. According to the 12th‑century chronicler William of Malmesbury, the monk “spoke of the comet, saying, ‘It is long since I saw you.’”

“It is long since I saw you,” William recorded, hinting at a prior sighting.

William omitted a precise date, leaving scholars to piece together a timeline. If Eilmer was at least five in the 989 apparition of Halley’s comet, he would have been born by ↑ 984 and would have been in his eighties by 1066. This scenario forces his famed flight into the first decade of the 11th century, a period when he was “in his first youth.”Recent research by James Aitcheson of the University of Leicester challenges that view, proposing that the comet Eilmer recalled was the 1018 apparition, which would shift his birth to the early 1000s and his flight to the 1020s‑1040s. The glide covered roughly ↑ 600 ft, clearing the town wall before a crash in a valley beside the River Avon, breaking both legs. Malmesbury Abbey still honors him with a stained‑glass window. For contemporary context on Halley’s comet visits, see Reuters. The debate illustrates how sparse medieval records can spawn centuries‑long scholarly disputes.
