Marburg case Uganda confirmed amid Ebola crisis

Ugandan health officials, working under intense disease surveillance for the ongoing Ebola outbreak, have confirmed a Marburg case Uganda in a 18‑month‑old child who succumbed to the illness, Africa CDC reported to Reuters. The toddler’s death marks ↓ 1 fatality; officials say no secondary infections have emerged.

Marburg virus, a close relative of Ebola, triggers a hemorrhagic fever with transmission pathways that mirror its infamous cousin. While the Ministry of Health declined to elaborate publicly, a spokesperson told reporters they were unaware of a broader Marburg outbreak.

“We are monitoring contacts closely, and to date none have shown symptoms,” the ministry official said.

Africa CDC added that all identified contacts remain asymptomatic, and the country reports zero active cases of Marburg at this time. The confirmation arrives as the nation continues to grapple with the larger pandemic pressure from Ebola, stretching already‑stretched health resources.
