Long COVID costs are now a silent fiscal crisis, projected to top ↓ $8 billion between 2025 and 2027 as more than 44 million Americans report lingering symptoms.

Long COVID costs: a looming liability for the nation

The condition, defined by symptoms persisting beyond three months, translates into an average annual burden of ↓ $11,646 per patient, with >90% stemming from productivity losses that ripple through employers. A computational simulation by CUNY researchers modeled individual trajectories, factoring incidence rates of 6‑20% and symptom duration up to three years, to generate these estimates.

Productivity drag fuels the bulk of expenses

The model shows that even the conservative 6% prevalence yields a $2.01 billion yearly cost, while a 10% rate pushes it to $3.4 billion. Persistent cases—many still active five years after infection—inflate the total further, suggesting the $8 billion figure remains a lower bound.

“Without a coordinated national strategy, these expenses will only climb,” warn researchers.

Yet federal support is waning: the HHS Office of Long COVID Research was closed in 2025, and NIH funding streams were cut, leaving a fragmented response. State‑level guidance on masks, ventilation, and vaccination continues to shift, adding regulatory uncertainty. The shortage of specialized clinics compounds the problem, forcing patients to manage symptoms with limited resources. As Reuters reports, the economic drag could pressure labor markets and fiscal policy unless decisive action is taken.
