After months of a public showdown over New York’s pied-à-terre tax, hedge‑fund titan Ken Griffin signaled that Citadel will stay the course on the 350 Park Avenue megaproject.

Griffin’s stance amid the mayoral feud

The dispute began when Mayor Zohran Mamdani unveiled a Tax Day video outside Griffin’s $238 million penthouse, calling the policy a “necessary revenue stream.” Griffin’s camp called the stunt creepy and threatened to pull the ↑ $6 billion redevelopment. Citadel’s chief operating officer Gerald Beeson wrote that the project would generate 6,000 construction jobs and over 15,000 permanent positions.

Financial calculus overrides political theater

Vornado CEO Steven Roth confirmed on a Tuesday earnings call that Citadel remains a 60 % partner and the anchor tenant for the 1‑million‑square‑foot tower. “New York is the world’s financial hub; abandoning it is not a simple decision,” Roth told Reuters. The city’s private‑sector employment rose ↑ 55,000 year‑over‑year, and venture capital inflows hit $6.3 billion, according to the NYC Economic Development Corp.

“Citadel will be a principal player in financial services for far longer than the mayor’s term,” Griffin said in a recent interview.

Analysts note that while the pandemic accelerated remote‑work trends and prompted some firms to explore Florida, the concentration of capital, talent and infrastructure in Manhattan keeps firms like Citadel anchored.

Mayor Mamdani, a self‑identified democratic socialist, reiterated his goal: “I want New Yorkers to succeed and to see firms like Citadel contribute to our economy.” The feud shows no sign of cooling, but the financial calculus appears to have won.
