K-278 Komsomolets: Radioactive Submarine Leak Persists in Norwegian Sea

A Soviet-era nuclear submarine resting 1,600 meters beneath the Norwegian Sea continues to release radioactive material, according to a recent PNAS study. The K-278 Komsomolets sank in 1989 after an onboard fire, carrying a nuclear reactor and two nuclear torpedoes. Norwegian researchers led by Justin Gwynn conducted a 2019 survey using a remotely operated vehicle, detecting cesium and strontium leaking through cracks in the deteriorating hull. Radiation levels near the wreck reach hundreds of thousands of times above normal background levels, yet concentrations drop sharply within a few feet due to ocean dilution. Marine life including sponges, corals, and anemones show slightly elevated radiation but no visible deformities. Sediment samples indicate minimal contamination. The nuclear torpedoes remain intact since the 1990s, preventing a larger disaster. Researchers warn the reactor’s corrosion and structural weakening mean the risk is contained ‘for now’ but will grow over time. Cleanup would be expensive, dangerous, and technically challenging.
