Washington — A federal judge has barred the Kennedy Center from shutting its doors for a long‑awaited renovation, insisting the venue stay operational while the $↓ 150 million overhaul proceeds.

Kennedy Center renovation order sparks political backlash

The ruling also demands the removal of former President Donald Trump’s name from the complex, a move critics say erodes the building’s historic identity. “The public cannot be denied access to a cultural landmark,” the judge wrote,

“even as the structure endures significant wear.”

Officials from the Center’s board expressed frustration, noting that the deferred maintenance has already left parts of the auditorium in disrepair. Reuters reported that the decision could delay the planned $150 million upgrade by up to a year, inflating costs and straining donor commitments. The controversy underscores a growing clash between political branding and cultural preservation in Washington’s capital.
