Iran sanctions pressure mounts

U.S. officials argue that the Iran sanctions campaign could erode the regime’s stability faster than the recent bombing spree. Intelligence reports and open‑source media confirm a widening economic crunch: fuel queues are lengthening, banks face runs, and the Treasury’s black‑list is choking off revenue.

A senior administration source told reporters, “The Iranians want money before they stop being bombed.” The message is now echoing through diplomatic corridors, where Oman, Qatar and Pakistan are mediating a tentative cease‑fire.

“They’re more scared of Treasury than the War Department,” one official said.

Talks include a proposal to give Iran and Oman a share of tolls from the Strait of Hormuz, a model borrowed from the Malacca‑Singapore corridor. Some Iranian hard‑liners balk; others see a lifeline.

Economic data shows Tehran generated ↓ $23 billion in oil sales in the first half of the year, shy of its ↓ 30% budget target, while sanctions have frozen assets worth billions.

President Trump halted air strikes after 13 days of attacks, citing a need to test diplomatic waters. Reuters notes that the pause may buy time for a broader settlement, but critics warn the administration’s “maximum‑pressure” playbook leaves few viable alternatives.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told Bloomberg that the U.S. retains both military and economic levers, and that Iran must choose between a negotiated deal and further isolation.
