Iran’s Strait of Hormuz Offer Sparks Diplomatic Tension

Iran has signaled it will lift its chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz if Washington ends the oil embargo and halts hostilities, a deal that would defer talks on Tehran’s nuclear agenda, according to two regional officials.

The proposal, relayed to the United States via Pakistan, arrives as the U.S. blockade continues to strangle Iranian oil exports and threatens to force Tehran to curtail production due to storage constraints.

Market ripple effects

Since the conflict began, Brent crude has surged to ↑ $108 a barrel, roughly ↑ 50% higher than pre‑war levels, inflating gasoline, fertilizer and food costs worldwide.

Trump, who recently extended the April 7 cease‑fire indefinitely, has signaled little willingness to concede, insisting any settlement must preclude a nuclear‑armed Iran.

“One of the main reasons we entered the war was to deny Iran the ability to develop a nuclear weapon,” the president told reporters.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, after meetings in Russia and Oman, urged regional partners—including Oman—to consider a toll‑collection mechanism for vessels transiting the strait, a move that could generate revenue for Tehran while easing global supply strains.

Pakistan‑led mediators are scrambling to bridge gaps, but the United States has postponed a planned envoy trip, preferring a phone‑based dialogue.
