Human herpes virus jumps to endangered lemurs

Scientists in Madagascar have confirmed that human herpes virus has crossed species barriers, infecting several Coquerel’s sifaka individuals. The outbreak was detected when veterinarians noted oral lesions resembling cold sores, a symptom familiar to humans. Genetic sequencing matched the pathogen to the HSV‑1 strain that causes common cold sores, marking a rare instance of a human virus thriving in wild primates.

Implications for wildlife health

Conservationists warn that human herpes virus could exacerbate already fragile populations, where ↓ 12 deaths have been recorded in just three weeks. The disease spreads through close contact, making ecotourism and research activities potential vectors.

“We are witnessing a clear signal that human pathogens can destabilize isolated ecosystems,” said Dr. Marie Ravel of the World Conservation Society.

Authorities are urging stricter hygiene protocols for field teams. For broader context on zoonotic spillovers, see Reuters and CDC.
