HPV Vaccine Slashes Cervical Cancer Mortality to Near Zero, New Study Shows

The Lancet’s latest cohort study delivers a stark statistic: girls immunised with the HPV vaccine before their teens face an almost nil risk of dying from cervical cancer before age 30.

HPV vaccine cuts cervical cancer mortality to zero

Researchers, funded by Cancer Research UK, tracked thousands of vaccinated individuals across England and found that the programme has already averted ↑ 200 deaths locally. Extrapolated worldwide, the impact could eclipse hundreds of thousands of lives.

Human papillomavirus, transmitted through skin‑to‑skin contact, remains the leading cause of cervical malignancies. While most infections clear naturally, persistent high‑risk strains can trigger cellular transformation decades later.

Global stakes and WHO ambition

The World Health Organization’s drive to immunise 90% of girls by age 15 aims to prevent up to 62 million deaths by 2120. The new data, echoed by Reuters, suggest the target is within grasp if vaccination coverage rebounds after a dip linked to the pandemic.

In 2022, ↓ 94% of the 350,000 cervical cancer fatalities occurred in low‑ and middle‑income nations, underscoring equity gaps.

“As vaccinated cohorts age, we will witness a dramatic fall in cervical cancer deaths,” says Professor Peter Sasieni, lead author.

Vaccination does not replace routine screening; the jab shields against the majority of oncogenic HPV types, yet residual risk persists. Combined with Pap smears, the strategy offers the most robust defence.

The vaccine’s reach extends beyond women. It curtails risks of oropharyngeal, anal, vulvar, vaginal and penile cancers, and is recommended for males as well, ideally between ages 9 and 12, though catch‑up programmes for older teens and young adults remain viable.

Uptake trends in the United States peaked in 2021, then slipped, a warning sign that complacency could erode hard‑won gains.
