Circular economy as a profit driver

Startups often view sustainability as a cost, but recent research shows that embedding a circular economy into the core model can boost the bottom line. Jordan and U.S. pilots reveal that when founders treat waste streams as revenue sources, venture survival rates climb.

Why the pitch matters

The first Jordan cohort, 18 participants assigned to preset waste categories, produced only one survivor. Frustration was high; many called the effort “destined to fail.” Switching to problem‑focused recruitment for the second cohort of 34 lifted success: five of eight teams graduated, and the bread‑to‑feed startup now reports ↑ 12% profit growth.

“We stopped teaching theory and let entrepreneurs solve real waste problems,” says a program director.

In the U.S., the circular economy was woven into an existing manufacturing accelerator. Participants, unaware of any green agenda, adopted reuse and repair tactics that cut material costs by ↓ 8%. One medical‑device team redesigned a product to replace disposable parts with serviceable components, shortening lead times and expanding market appeal. Early design decisions on material choice and product lifespan, experts argue, lock in competitive advantage before scaling. For more on the financial impact of circular models see Reuters and Bloomberg. The lesson is clear: present sustainability as a business opportunity, not an altruistic add‑on, and startups will chase it.
