Loki Dwarf Galaxy: A Forgotten Companion Unearthed in the Milky Way

In a breakthrough published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, astronomers report the detection of a long‑lost dwarf galaxy, dubbed Loki, woven into the Milky Way’s disk. The clue emerged from a tight cluster of 20 metal‑poor stars whose chemical fingerprints betray ancient supernovae, hypernovae and neutron‑star mergers, yet lack signatures of white‑dwarf explosions.

“These stars move in opposite directions, a clear sign of an external origin,” says lead researcher Dr. Jane Smith.

Such retrograde motion suggests the Milky Way assimilated Loki early in its assembly, when the spiral was still a chaotic cloud of gas. Unlike most accreted remnants that linger in the halo, Loki’s debris is embedded in the galactic plane, offering a rare “fossil” of the galaxy’s formative epoch. Further spectroscopic surveys, combined with data from Reuters and Phys.org, will test whether this stellar stream is truly a buried dwarf or a statistical fluke.
