Canadian health officials confirmed that a tourist from Toronto tested positive for hantavirus after disembarking the MV Hondius, a luxury liner that has become the focal point of a

hantavirus outbreak

sweeping the ship’s crew and passengers.

The patient, now in isolation at a Toronto hospital, reported fever and respiratory symptoms consistent with the disease.

“We are treating the case with utmost caution and have placed the individual under strict quarantine,” said Dr. Lena Morales of Public Health Canada.

According to Reuters, at least ↑ 12 crew members have shown serological signs of infection, prompting the cruise line to suspend all voyages until further notice.

Authorities are urging travelers who were aboard the MV Hondius between June 10 and June 18 to monitor for symptoms and contact health services immediately. The outbreak underscores the challenges of containing zoonotic diseases in confined environments.
