In a coordinated sweep, Google’s Threat Analysis Group and the FBI have dismantled a massive botnet that silently commandeered low‑cost Android handsets to veil illicit activity. Security researchers estimate the network commandeered ↓ 5 million devices, many of which were generic, off‑brand models sold in emerging markets.

The operation, uncovered through joint telemetry analysis, revealed that the botnet leveraged the devices’ default credentials and outdated firmware to route traffic through residential IPs, making attribution exceedingly difficult. According to a Reuters briefing, the illicit traffic accounted for a noticeable share of global proxy demand.

“This takedown demonstrates the power of public‑private partnership in confronting hidden cyber threats,” an FBI spokesperson said.

Google’s engineers have already pushed emergency patches to the Android Open Source Project, while urging users to verify device authenticity. The episode underscores a growing trend: cybercriminals increasingly weaponize the Internet of Things, turning everyday gadgets into covert conduits. Analysts at Bloomberg warn that similar schemes could emerge as 5G expands, amplifying both scale and speed.
